RAINWATER COLLECTION

A big shout out of thanks to Harvest Rain for sponsoring our Home and Garden Show.  They are the exclusive  rainwater collection company at our show.  James Grizzard, Director of Business Development spoke about rainwater collection.  He is supporting 2 bills in the 85th Texas Legislature this session for licensing.  The most important bill is HB 173 that would require an occupational license for rainwater collection installation.  Right now the industry is unregulated.

Some very interesting information about rainwater collection:
* 623 gallons of water is collected for 1 inch of rain times 1,000 sq. ft. of roof
* Central Texas averages 32" of annual precipitation; you could live off that amount
* Metal roofs are the best collection surface
* Rain water is the highest quality of water around
* Yes, rainwater collection for the whole house use is expensive, however it is: Reliable, Timely, Simple and the Filtration makes it potable.
* Best Filtration is UV for potable water; gutter screening is OK for other uses
* Tank types are very important and your choices are Polyethylene (plastic) which lasts for about 20 years; Galvanized with a painted liner and the Fiberglas lasts forever.
* The filtration methods are Ozone Systems, which require maintenance; Ultra Violet Light (UV) which is the industry standard and Reverse Osmosis which is the ultimate, but  wastes a lot of water.

James was most informative and sent the following note after the meeting:

Thank you for inviting Harvest Rain to attend yesterday’s meeting.  You had a great turnout with excellent questions.

I want to make James and myself available to you and all Rotary Club members to answer questions and/or discuss rainwater collection systems.

Also, please forward contact information regarding the local lenders that understand the how-to regarding mortgages and rainwater as a primary water source.  This is a question that comes up every few weeks and it will be great to have a couple of names that we could offer.Thank you again!

Best Regards,

James Grizzard
