"Why Rotary" - the story of Jack Mayo's passion for Rotary

 
Some interesting facts about Jack Mayo and is Rotary experience.
* His father in law was President of the Rotary Club of Austin in 1949.
* 50 years ago, his father in law took him to his first Rotary luncheon and then after retirement from the Navy, he joined Rotary.
* Jack served as District Governor in Southern California.
* Being temporarily paralyzed with polio his freshman year of high school, Jack was drawn to the Rotary Foundation's signature project, global eradication of Polio.
* Early in his membership into Rotary, he had the opportunity to hear a Paul Harris actor give one of Paul Harris's actual speeches and this changed Jack's involvement for life.
* He was called to put together a foundation to preserve Paul and Jean Harris' home that was built in 1905.  The foundation bought the home and is in renovation and preservation stages now.

Rotary is:
* A friendship club
* Welcoming to all visitors
* Has clubs all over the world (and has an app to locate clubs)
* Is family friendly - he took his family to Rotary International Conventions in the French Riviera and Singapore - the kids loved it.
* English speaking conventions because Rotary started in the US.
* Is eradicating Polio: 1979 was the last year a case was reported in the US; it has been eradicated in all industrialized nations and is only found in 3 countries today; Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.  $1.3Billion has been spent by Rotary to eradicate polio.
 
While on a cruise in Alaska, he came upon a "Rotary" bench atop Dutch Harbor that was made in Shiner, Texas
Jack's claim to fame outside of Rotary is that while a Navy Commander, he was directed to give a tour to a movie producer.  The producer liked Jack's nickname (Mayonnaise) so well that he changed the name of the character in his movie to Zack Mayo - yes our Jack is the namesake for "An Officer and a Gentleman".
 
Jack ended his most enlightening presentation with a quote from Paul Harris: "To be successful we (Rotary), must move with the times".
